Tips for Tackling Scuff Marks on Your Floors and Walls

No matter what you do, scuff marks seem to quickly make their unsightly appearance on your office’s walls and floors.

Unfortunately, unless you ask each of your employees, clients, customers, and guests to remove their shoes, never move furniture, and never touch the walls, scuff marks are a part of your reality. Thankfully, removing these unsightly marks from your office floors and walls isn’t too much work.

How to Remove Scuff Marks from Your Floors

Office floors take a serious beating every day, making these marks inevitable. Since removing shoes in this public space is not really an option, you’ll need some proven methods in your arsenal to tackle the scuff marks on your floors. Here’s what we found works best:

Tennis Ball Method — When you find a black scuff mark on your wooden, tiled, or laminate floors, reach for a clean tennis ball. Apply gentle pressure to the ball and slowly buff away the spot. To avoid being on your hands and knees, use a sharp knife to cut a small X in the ball and place the ball on the end of a broom or mop handle, and do the work standing on your two feet.

Eraser Method — Use a clean gum or pink eraser to remove scuff marks from wood. Gently rub the spot and vacuum up the leftover mess.

Baking Soda Method — For laminate, ceramic, or stone floors and stubborn marks, you can use a bit of baking soda and water for added abrasion. Use a clean, wet microfiber or cotton cloth and sprinkle a small amount of baking soda on the mark and scrub away.

How to Remove Scuff Marks from Your Walls

Most office walls are painted, though sometimes you’ll find a wallpapered, tiled, or otherwise treated wall. The following methods are best for painted walls, so if your office has wood or stone walls, try using the above methods to remove these ugly marks from floors. Here are our tried and true methods for tackling scuff marks on painted walls:

Water and Cloth Method — Most fresh marks can be removed with a soft cloth and water. This is the best method when it comes to protecting your paint. Get your cloth slightly damp and gently buff the area to remove the mark with a bit of pressure.

Dish Soap Method — If you need a bit more cleaning power, try adding gentle dish soap to the equation and try again. You may need to add a small amount of baking soda to your mixture and scrub again.

Melamine Sponge Method — If all else fails, you can try using a melamine cleaning sponge, but do so cautiously because an overzealous hand can cost you some paint. Dampen your sponge and with gentle pressure, gently scrub away the mark.
