Disinfection is Key to a Healthy Work Environment

As fall and winter approach, it is more important than ever to disinfect your office to ensure a healthy work environment.

More and more companies and businesses are welcoming back their staff and customers, which means it is essential to keep your facilities clean — especially since we will soon be sailing into flu season. A clean and healthy work environment starts with good practices such as regular washing of hands and sanitizing in-between.

Hand Washing and Sanitation Stations for a Healthy Work Environment

Encourage Regular Hand Washing — Throughout the workday, your employees, customers, and clients touch countless objects and surfaces, allowing germs to make their way across your office. As people handle these items, pathogens spread to their hands and can cause infection when touched to their eyes, nose, ears, or mouth. In many cases, most germs won’t cause harm to humans, and those that do are pretty manageable—however, some bacteria and viruses, such as COVID-19, present unique challenges. There is still so much unknown, but it does appear to spread quickly. Keep those that work in or visit your office healthy by encouraging frequent hand washing.

Unfortunately, many people do not wash their hands effectively. The process is simple and includes scrubbing both sides of your hands, in-between fingers, wrists, and under fingernails with soap in warm water for at least 20 seconds. Twenty seconds is roughly the amount of time it takes to sing the ABCs, so sing as you wash. Thoroughly rinse, use a paper towel to dry your hands, and exit the restroom without touching other surfaces such as the faucet or door handles.

Set up Hand Sanitizing Stations — You can help slow the spread of germs by setting up hand sanitizing stations throughout your office or business. Of course, correctly washing your hands is superior to using sanitizer, but it is the next best thing. Your staff may not have the time to stop what they’re doing and wash their hands, so having hand sanitizing stations readily available is key. You’ll want to place bottles at each desk (including reception or front desks), near every entrance and exit, and by elevators and stairwells. You’ll also want stations set up in lunch and break rooms, kitchen, and outside bathrooms.

Moreover, to help stop the spread of germs, give your employees their own container of disinfectant wipes so they can wipe down their desks and frequently touched items several times throughout their workday.
