Can I Clean Leather Office Chairs?

Leather office chairs add a bit of sophistication and luxury to every workspace, so you want to keep them looking their best.

If your office uses chairs made of leather, it’s essential to care for them with regular maintenance to keep them looking their best. Thankfully, caring for leather chairs is relatively easy, but it is crucial to keep in mind that you do not treat them like other fabrics.

How to Clean Leather Office Chairs in 5 Easy Steps

With proper care and cleaning, you can keep your office chairs looking good for years to come. Here’s how:

STEP ONE — Before attempting to clean your leather chair, make sure to determine what type of leather you’re working with. For the most part, you’ll be able to find a manufacturers’ tag on the furniture somewhere that will provide this information, as well as cleaning tips and warnings.

  • Look below cushions or the underside of the chair for tags. If you can’t find any, look at the papers and pages that came with the chair. If you cannot locate any written materials, you may find information online at a store that sells the same chair.
  • In the best-case scenario, your tag will give you instructions on cleaning the furniture, such as what products to use or, more importantly, which not to use.
  • If all else fails, it is typically safe to assume that most leather furniture is top-coat protected leather, and using mild soap and water is generally safe for use.

STEP TWO — After you’ve determined which leather your chair is from, make sure to vacuum your chair out to the best of your abilities.

  • Always use a vacuum attachment with soft bristles.
  • Make sure to get into crevices and between cushions.
  • In between cleanings, it’s best to vacuum your leather chairs regularly to prevent wear and tear.
  • Watch for areas that will need extra attention as you clean, such as stains.

STEP THREE — Now that your chair is prepped and dusted, you can get your cleaner ready. Some people prefer to make their cleaner, while others prefer to purchase cleaners at their local hardware store. Here’s how you can make your own:

  • Use a mild liquid soap, such as Dawn dish soap.
  • Try to use distilled water versus tap water. Tap water may contain chemicals such as chlorine that can damage leather.
  • Mix one part soap to four parts water until gentle suds form.

STEP FOUR — Before cleaning your chair, test a small area in a hidden place and allow it to dry. If you do not see any damage, dip your clean, soft rag into your cleaning solution and wring it out thoroughly. Now you can wipe down your chair.

  • After applying the cleaning solution to your chair, take another rag and soak it with distilled water and wring it out so you can wipe and “rinse” the chair.
  • With a third, dry rag, dry off the chair.

STEP FIVE — Lastly, make sure to condition the leather after cleaning it to restore its look. You can buy a leather oil that is fit for the type of leather you need.

  • Gently rub a small amount of oil into your chair until it has a nice shine.
  • With a clean rag, wipe any excess oil away.
