Maintaining High-End Surfaces in the Office

Cleaning High-End Surfaces

High-end surfaces, including natural stone, concrete and glass tile, set a tone of grace and elegance in your office or facility. If you have invested in upgraded finishes for your business, proper care will keep them looking great and extend their life. It’s important to know what type of surfaces you have, in order to identify the right cleaning products and procedures. As a general rule of thumb, when it comes to cleaning and maintaining your upscale finish surfaces, less is definitely more.

Maintaining Granite, Marble and Other Natural Stone

Although strong and durable, natural stone is surprisingly vulnerable if not cared for correctly. The right way to maintain granite and other stone surfaces depends on whether a sealer has been applied. If so, your worries are over. Sealed stone needs nothing more than a damp wiping or mopping with a microfiber cloth or sponge, using water and a mild detergent. If the surface has not been sealed, especially if it is marble, things get a little trickier. Many cleaning or treatment products can stain, becoming trapped in the microscopic pores of the stone surface. Slate and marble are both highly prone to scratching as well. Use water and a mild, colorless detergent to avoid discoloration.

Maintaining Glass Tile Surfaces

Glass tile is popular today, valued for its sleek and contemporary look. Unfortunately, it can be easily scratched or etched if you use the wrong approach to keeping it clean. White vinegar diluted with water is effective for keeping glass surfaces of all kinds — including tile — shiny and streak-free. Avoid powdered or abrasive cleansers or any harsh chemical that could etch the shiny surface. Opt for microfiber cloth or a natural sponge, but avoid scrubbing sponges or “magic eraser” tools for cleaning. Many glass tile applications utilize grout. Take care not to damage the surrounding tile if you must scrub the grout lines.

Exposed or Sealed Concrete Surfaces

Designers love using interior concrete accents, and it’s showing up in many commercial settings as countertops, floors and pre-cast furniture. Exposed (unsealed) concrete is especially popular, but it poses some real maintenance challenges. Even more porous than natural stone, exposed concrete is a dirt magnet and it can stain if you look at it the wrong way. Clean exposed concrete surfaces with a small amount of neutral soap mixed with hot water, applied with a clean cloth, sponge or mop. Another great option for cleaning concrete is steam, for discolorations, grease stains or spotting.
